Vermont Lighthouse

originally uploaded by philethier.

This Lighthouse, from Colchester Reef on Lake Champlain, served as home and workplace for 11 successive lighthouse keepers and their families. Visitors experience daily 19th-century life on the lake and learn about Lake Champlain history.

The Lighthouse was built in 1871 to mark three reefs between Vermont and New York. Because it had to endure strong lake winds, the structure’s 25-foot-square post-and-beam frame, foundation, roof, and tower are pegged, bolted, and secured with 1½-inch thick iron rods. The Lighthouse has a mansard roof and scrolled window frames typical of the then-fashionable French Second Empire style.

In 1952, the abandoned Lighthouse was dismantled from its site on the lake and re-constructed at the Shelburne Museum, where it sits near the 220-foot steamboat Ticonderoga.

Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley Encourages Vocations

Cardinal O’Malley was Bishop in Palm Beach Gardens, Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola which is my parish. I remember he delivered a sermon in English, Spanish and Creole. He is quite a linguist. He is also a very nice man. I was sorry to see him leave our diocese but our loss is Boston’s gain. I wonder if there will ever be an American Pope?

Offering a distinctive collection of functional and decorative art for the home and garden, The HandCraft House in Brewster on Cape Cod features the original watercolor paintings of gallery owner Eileen Smith and the handmade creations of America’s leading craft artisans. Eileen’s paintings capture the natural beauty of Cape Cod and reflect the seasonal moods of the peninsula.

Movie: Path to 9/11

The movie Path to 9/11 is on tonight. I wasn’t sure if I was going to watch it because of all the bad publicity. I have it on now but I am mainly only listening to it. I know that what the hijackers did was horrendous, but I wonder what would happen if they were portrayed in a more positive light. Only because I think once upon a time they were probably somewhat normal like when they were young, before they became influenced by evil. I know this sounds like I am sympathetic to them, but I comdemn what they did. I just would like to go back to the point where they went wrong and see them as human beings and not as animals. Force alone is not going to kill the beast of radical Islam. It also takes some understanding of the dynamics of how these monstrous people were created and what motivates them.

Grandparents’ Day

 grandparents.jpg

National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.Continue reading “Grandparents’ Day”
