Labor Movement History – Jim Moran and PhilaPOSH

I was a VISTA community organizer in 1979 at the Philadelphia Council of Neighborhood Organizations (PCNO), a coalition of over 200 neighborhood groups founded by a Jesuit priest, Father Joseph Kakalec. I was assigned to the Bridesburg section of the city where there were concerns that the cancer rate was much higher than the rest of the city. The first week of my assignment at PCNO, I was a bit unsure about where to go to get started (besides of course the Bridesburg neighborhood). Someone and I don’t remember who suggested that I go over and visit the Philadelphia Area Project for Occupational Safety and Health.I appreciated the suggestion and went over to the organization’s office on Market Street. PhilaPOSH is the second oldest COSH group in the US. For workers who do not belong to unions (and for many who do), COSH groups are their only available resource for health and safety issues. I remember going in the elevator and going up to the third floor (I think). That is where I met Jim Moran.

Jim Moran

Yesterday I was doing some research for writing a Labor Day article for this blog and I discovered that Jim retired from PhilaPOSH a year ago and it brought back memories of my VISTA days. Jim was born in Philadelphia in 1939 and he was a member of ACTWU, IUE, USWA, UAW, IBT, TNG and CWA. For many years, he was an Executive Board Member of TNG/CWA 38010. He attended the first PhilaPOSH training program in 1975 and after volunteering for 2 years on the PhilaPOSH Board as its first Chair, he was hired as a full time staffer in May 1977. Jim later became the Director of PhilaPOSH.Continue reading “Labor Movement History – Jim Moran and PhilaPOSH”

A Short History of the Mass

mass60.gif

In nomine Patris, et Filii, + et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

Introibo ad altare Dei.

Following the Council of Trent, Pope St Pius V, concerned with some innovations and improper additions in the Mass in some areas, reviewed the Roman Missal. When he was finished, he declared that all priests of the Latin Church throughout the World must use the Roman Missal he prepared when they said Mass. They could not add a single word to it, or choose to leave a single word out, without his authority. Only those rites which had already been established for more than two centuries before the date he promulgated the new Missal were allowed to say Mass differently (eg, the Milanese Rite, the Dominican Rite).

And so the Mass changed very little for over 400 years. (Parts of it, such as the Kyrie and the Eucharistic Prayer have remained unchanged for well over 1,000 years!) A few Popes made minor changes to the Missal over time. The Holy Week liturgies were changed in the 1940s. And then, many thought it was sacrilege, Pope John XXIII added the name of St Joseph to the Canon of the Mass (the Eucharistic Prayer). For over 1,000 years, since it had been settled by Pope Gregory the Great, the Canon of the Mass had not been changed. It was considered the untouchable core of the Mass.Continue reading “A Short History of the Mass”
